Once again our SAVs participated in the annual Standard Chartered Marathon. This is the 3rd time we had participated in the Wheel Chair Race….. We are not racing! We are escorting the Wheel Chair racer to ensure their safety during the Race.
The SAVs had a wild of a time on Good Friday as we set out in the early morning on an urban skate. Even though the rain had just passed, rendering the grounds moist, that did not dampened our spirits. Some of us had actually skated from Jurong East to the start point at Vivocity (*thumbs up*).
The route took us from Vivocity to Chinatown via Bukit Merah. Chinatown was where we took a tea (literally) break at Smith Street food centre. From there on, we headed toward Marina Barrage. Beautiful view of the mouth of Singapore River and spectacular photo-spot of the city skyline where the Singapore Flyer dominated the foreground.
We are already looking forward to the next morning uban skate. No traffic, no crowds, no holds-bar! Chiong ah!
Applause to the first SAV recruitment drive of the year. A total of 21 passionate skaters turned up the recruitment, ranging from the very young to the young at heart. The event was spread over 2 Saturdays. The first day saw the skaters taking theory lessons on safe skating etiquette, a skills assessment session and wrapped up with an urban skating clinic.
Implemented only since the previous recruitment in 2008, the urban skating clinic received positive feedback from the skaters. It enabled them to understand the ways in which SAVs can contribute during an urban skating event. At the same time, the clinic taught them invaluable skating techniques that are usually not taught during formal skate lessons.
The second installment of the recruitment was held the following Saturday. Components included a skills assessment and skaters were given a lesson on basic skate instruction. Following that, they were grouped in smaller numbers to experience teaching a skating skill to “beginners”. It was a wholly new experience for them as it is never easy stepping into the shoes of a total beginner. But everyone had fun! It was clear that the skaters are on the road to becoming a full-fledged SAV as they equipped themselves with knowledge on providing advice for basic skills like V-Walk, Stride 1 and Heel-Stop.
The recruitment drive marked the end of learning in a controlled environment. Now, the prospective SAVs have to put their skills to test during actual events like the Saturday Night Skates. Then, they will familiarise themselves with handling real-life skating scenarios out in the urban jungle. After completing 2 of these practical sessions, they will receive their orange tees and officially initiated as an SAV! All the best to them!
As we bid farewell to an eventful year of 2008, let’s welcome 2009 with open skates!
Here’s wishing all SAVs, skaters, family and friends a
HAPPY HAPPY NEW YEAR
, with many happy returns. All the best and may the skating community grow larger and more vibrant.
Many thanks to the Executive Committee members for putting the events of 2008 together. They have surely worked hard to achieve SAV’s mission of promoting a safe and vibrant skating community in Singapore. *applause*
Cheers to all SAVs for taking time to volunteer and help out at all the events. And gratitudes to all family and friends of SAVs for adding spice and life to the skating community.

The inaugural Amazing Inline Race just concluded saw participants skating through the hustle and bustle of Singapore’s city centre looking for historical landmarks. The clues they had tested their knowledge of Singapore’s history. They hunted down nostalgic locations such as the original Satay Club, the oldest bridge in Singapore, an old lighthouse, a memorial fountain and lots more. At each checkpoint, they were given an opportunity to answer a bonus question that delved deeper into history.
The participants’ history knowledge were not to be underestimated. The history of the landmarks dates back to the time when some of the participants were still toddlers and most were not even born yet! Despite that, their ingenuity brought them through the race. The winning team was the only team which managed to hit the jackpot for all 10 landmarks. It was a stunner to know that their most mature member was below 25 years old and the youngest was barely 12! Truly Amazing!
Many thanks to the participants and the committee for putting this event together. It was a HUGE success and we look forward to a sequel. Cheers to Skateline for sponsoring the prizes.

Another year in which SAVs are part of the Standard Chartered Marathon. This time, we focused our efforts on the exhilarating and inspiring wheelchair race. It is indeed a satisfying experience lending our helping hands to the less fortunate. Salutes to the wheelchair race participants and pats on the shoulder for our SAVs, for giving up their early Sunday morning for such a meaningful event.
Yeah! Give it up for our SAVs!
Hey guys, more wheels (skates) doesn't more speed!
Wheelchair race participant. Cheers!
Rearing up at the start line, awaiting the flag-off.
Congratulations on completing the race! You've earned it!
November’s night skate explored the Western reaches of the NParks Park Connector Network (PCN). The Ulu Pandan PCN stretches from Bouna Vista MRT to Bukit Batok Central. The smooth, long track along the canal offered skaters – especially speedys – an opportunity to practice their Stride 3 and Double-Push techniques.
The PCN is actually physically separated by an abandoned railway track, which was deemed impassable by the SAV recce party. Instead, we took a detour off into a private estate in order to arrive at Bukit Batok.
Great thanks to our recce party, SAVs, and all skaters who participated in the fun!

A sneak peek at the informal SAV tee.
All warmed up and ready to skate, even without the skates on!
